Garmin eTrex Legend

"I have owned this GPS and used it on my motorcycle. It is a good unit and worked very well for my purposes at the time.

I find it surprising however; the Canadian Tire is still selling these units (at it's full price); as it has been discontinued by Garmin for almost 2 years and the last software update was issued in 2008."

Does the job

"I bought this primarily for Geocaching. Fairly easy to use and to understand how it works, but careful reading of the instructions is required to fully undertand and to ensure the settings are correctly set. Satellite reception is sensitive to overcast weather and tree cover which can throw position acuracy by as much as 30+ feet. Don't rely on the lanyard around your neck to prevent loosing the unit. The battery cover can easily open from the unit's own weight and you risk loosing your GPS. I hold on to mine with my hands at all times after it fell to the ground that way.
One operation drawback is that it detects nearby geocaches and records them as found long before getting to the actual caches. It doesn't happen all the time but enough to be a nuisance. Accuracy in position reading for Geocaching is mostly within 10 feet, sometimes showing 30 feet away while next to a cache, sometimes showing 1 ft away for same. That all depends on satellite reception at the time. Not a bad unit, but could be better for the price. It does the job"

Disappointing

"I purchased this unit last week before a backwoods camping trip. I didn't like the unit at all. Here's why:
1) The base maps that come with the unit are utterly useless. From my home in downtown toronto, only the lake and Yonge street are shown on the map. When camping, the map showed me and nothing else.
2) You can't purchase maps for the unit in reasonable sizes. For example, you can't buy a single TOPO map or even a collection like Algonquin Park. Instead, you have to purchase every TOPO map for all of Quebec and half of Ontario as a single purchase, which has a cost comparable to the unit itself.
3) You can't buy the maps as a digital download. Canadian maps are only sold on CD-ROMs that will need to be mailed to you.
4) The battery life is very short.
5) The display is low resolution and difficult to read while in a canoe or the rain or any other condition that would hamper your ability to focus entirely on the display.
6) Some units use an SD card. I believe these units are easier for loading maps you might happen to find on the internet.

Magellan sells Canadian maps at much better prices and they are available for digital download. Magellan's Canadian offerings include a package that allows you to choose any 5 Canadian regions for $40. I wish I had done my research before purchasing this unit from Garmin."

"I bought this unit for hunting/fishing/hiking.Works great though best with lithium batteries for long life and lightness. Has good reception in the open and has a little trouble with deep cover.The next best unit would be Legend HCx . It has all the options you'll ever need . Very easy to learn ; a 7 year old can navigate with it after 10 minutes of practice."

Great GPS, Not for everyone, No MAPS!!

"Ok Let me start by saying this is a great GPS, It's a little outdated now, there are better models, but this one pretty much does it all. Will NOT do driving directions. Unless programmed with a PC. And you would also the Software, There is a map on in of highways, but its very basic."

Great Unit !!!

"Bought this unit in late Spring. Takes a few minutes on initial start -up to get it's bearings but that is it's only problem...very minor.
Was very impressed with it's versatility, accuracy and ability to download mapping software off of my PC. I've had it out on the boat in sunshine, clouds and in storms and never failed. I've had it on the dash of my truck at highway speed and it tracked within 18ft of my position as well as following me through very steep canyons as well !!
Used it on hunting trips and have been 45 km into the middle of the bush and still been tracked within feet of my position. Very pleased with it.
Very easy to learn how to use. My suggestion is to practice with it around the yard and neighbourhood to get to use to it features."

Excellent, with some cavats..

"I have had this unit for 4 years now, very pleased with it. I paid nearly $300 for it back then.

The topo maps and the serial interface (and a USB/serial converter) get the the full use out of this unit to load maps and tracks into this unit. I use it on the cable with the laptop for traveling in the car.

Signal strength weakens inside buildings, inside vehicles (put near window) under tree cover or wires or on overcast days but generally a signal can be found. Sometimes leaves a break in a track, but easy to work with. Will tell you where the car has been and how fast it was driven for over 16hrs when left in the back window.

The small size (cellphone size) is an asset but of course the display is small. A colour display would be nice but for the price, monochrome is fine. Vibration (from handlebar mount on dirtbike) has been rough on the display, sometimes needs to be powered off to clear display, but always works! Occasionally joystick quits, same deal.

For the price, excellent unit, especially if you are looking for small size. Excellent fit and reception in a shirt pocket."

"I have had my eTrex Legend for 5 years and it has to be the best GPS for off road ATV use. I was using it to explore a new area with the off road maps loaded. The GPS indicated there was a road where I could see no evidence of a road. I went in the direction the GPS indicated through the underbrush and sure enough, there was the road, hidden by years of growth and no use. Today it is one of our most popular trails. I highly recommend the eTrex Legend to anyone who is serious about off roading. I also use it with the optional handlebar mount on my touring motocycle. It has all the small roads etc. Great for gettimg away from heavy traffic.
I download my day trips to my computer and print them out. As a member of a local ATV club, I share these maps with others to use and enjoy.
Want the best all around GPS? The eTrex Legend is it. Look no further."

"A very good basic GPS unit. I've owned mine for 5 years now and have used it around the world. It actually helped me navigate through the argentine desert! Very happy with it and good bang for the buck ratio."

Question:

** I am looking for a GPS unit that I can use in a city. Is this a product that I can use to get from example my hotel to the hospital? my hotel to stores using the bus system?

Answer:

Technically, it can, but it would be a painstaking inefficient process. A roadmap GPS would easily do what you described.

Answer:

You can but that is not really suited for that purpose. You need to input coordinates to have it tell you where to go. Maps are limited and the unit shows you a direct line route from point A to point B, not considering obstacles on the way like buildings. A road map GPS is better suited for the purpose that you described. It will give you an actual path to follow. You can type in adresses or business names and it will lead you there

Question:

I'm wondering, can you download and install maps from the web? And, do you have to purchase them, or are they free? I'd like to be able to use the GPS for not only geocaching, but to locate lakes etc for fishing.

It comes pre-loaded with maps but they are limited and mostly useless. You can't upload any maps either.

Answer:

Included data shows only highways and very major roads, city and town names, and a some large lakes, rivers and airports. Might be fine to track a hike or trip, but not enough to guide into unknown territory. Most towns show no detail at all.

Is the screen cluttered and difficult to read?

I want to stick to a "cheaper" handheld unit for now and the idea of being able to use topo maps is a bonus when considering a basic GPS. Some ppl say the screen is cluttered and difficult to read. Is this really the case?

I don't find the screen cluttered but in bright daylight, the glare sometimes make it difficult to read.
