Bad Investment

"I have nothing against Thule. I bought two of these bags on sale. I attached them to the roof rack. I know that Canadian Tire used to claim that these are water resistant at least, but I can't find that anymore.
Bottom line is, these are not even water resistant. A strainer keeps more water in then these. They both filled with water and that was from driving through a small rain storm. It blows my mind how these things that obviously would end up in the elements, would be designed so poorly. Do not buy these! Highly unrecommended even when on sale. Everything that you put in them will get soaked.."

Couldn't have made the trip without it.

"I don't think I would pay full price for this, but, I bought it on sale for a quick fix to get the family (wife, 2 teenagers, baby, dog and myself) to the cottage. Worked fantastically the whole trip up. Way home, hit a storm with high winds and enough water to fill a lake in minutes. Fortunately, only clothes, pillows, etc.. in carrier because everything in it was wet when we unpacked. I have used hard car toppers in the past and never had water infiltrate, but again for the sale price, I am thrilled with the extra room it gave me. And my daughter was thrilled to be able to bring a friend on the trip because of it."

NOT waterproof

"We purchased this to put above our trailer for soft and light things like sleeping bags and airbeds. Arrived at camp to discover it had a serious puddle on the bottom of it and our things were soaked. Our things on the top were mostly dry but the bottom was drenched."

good initially, but no good in freezing weather

"i purchased this last year, and was initially very pleased. i only used it on one trip last year, and it performed well in the snow and weather. HOWEVER, we used it this winter from b.c. to saskatchewan, and it performed well, untill i got home and rinsed the debris off it. the insides were flaking off; it was awful! i don't know if it was because of the freezing temps or what, but it left a huge mess inside the bag. they did replace it at canadian tire, i'm thankful for that, but beware using it in freezing temps."

Excellent product!

"I purchased this item for a camping trip with my children & family dog after having read reviews on the hard carriers by Karrite. The reviews explained how difficult those were to assemble & attach to car. Therefore, I chose the Thule soft sided carrier. I was very impressed with how simple it was to use. I drive a Suzuki Vitara with roof rails. The product was attached in seconds, filled to capacity with at least 75 lbs, and we set off across BC via the Coquihalla Hwy at speeds of up to 140 kms/hour. The Thule bag didn't budge. I forgot it was up there, as there was no drag, no noise, no shifting. We used a camping mat inside on the floor of the carrier to prevent tent poles and/or other hard items from banging or denting on the roof. It worked perfectly. I bought extra bungee cords and zap straps just in case it needed additional securing but never had to use them. Even at very high speeds on a very elevated highway, the product was perfect. No noise, no shifting, no drag. Couldn't believe how well it worked. While camping in Shuswap it suddenly started to rain, hurricane style with very strong winds. The Thule bag, still on my roof, stayed completely dry inside. I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants a reasonably priced cargo carrier that requires no assembly and installs in seconds."

"Went all the way to Montreal, Que and back to Toronto with this on the roof of my SUV. Solution to the flapping straps is to 'trap' them in the door. No scratches on the roof as far as I can see but if it's strapped down works like it should. Mind you still have to test this in driving rain =)"

"I didn't experience any scratching on the roof of my vehicle. I did try placing a towel under it for awhile, but it didn't stay put. I did experience some flapping of the ties at highway speeds. I wrapped them around the carrier bars and tied them tight and this seemed to help. I also saw other travellers using additional straps wrapped around their fabric carriers, which also might be a good idea to prevent any shifting of the carrier, which it tended to do. It worked great to provide some extra storage space on long trips and I don't have to worry about storing a hard body carrier."

SERVES THE PURPOSE

"This Cargo Bag definitely made us more room as we needed and stayed in place on the vehicle roof. Our only concern and it is a big one is that the bottom of the bag scratched up the roof. The bag could have been made with a softer bottom. I would highly recommend putting a towel or something underneath the bag before loading. We did this the second time we used it, and there were no more scratches. Overall, Good purchase for the price. A lot less than the hard roof boxes."

"This product states that it is weather proof. It is not water proof. You need to put your things in plastic bags if there is any chance of rain. The carrier did the job needed. I would buy a hard shell carrier next time."

Where do you find the rubber mat to avoid your car for being scratched fron cargo bag?

I just recently purchase a Thule cargo bag and I want to know wich kind of rubber mat you can put on your car roof to avoid it being scratched.

It is actually the dust that gets caught under the bag, not the bag itself. You could look at purchasing a rooftop box. Unfortunately, there are no rubber accessories from SportRack or Thule for this.

Answer:

We haven't ever noticed scratching from a well secured bag. The scratches only occur when you load it onto the roof, or if you don't snug it up tight to the rails. If it is tight, it doesn't shift and thus doesn't scratch.

Will this work with sidebars only?

I have an SUV that has sidebars that run from the front to the back. I do not have crossbars.

Its long enough attached between your side bars with the weight riding on your roof.

We use this on a Honda Odyssey van that also only has siderails. We fasten it to the side rails and ensure that the front strap is in front of the connector where the rail is fastened to the vehicle roof.
We have taken this fully loaded from central Ontario, through Quebec, New Brunswick, to the southern tip of Nova Scotia and up through PEI and back to Ontario with not so much as a single issue.
It is an EXELLENT and easy to use product and saved us quite a lot of money as we would have had to have cross bars added for a hard-top carrier.

how is fuel economy with this thing?

I had this thing stuffed full on my minivan roof and did not notice a difference in handling or fuel economy.

Fuel economy did not change. I got excellent mileage. It cost me $60.00 in gas each way between Vancovuer and Sicamous. My vehicle was loaded with 4 adults, 3 tents, and tons of other supplies, from folding chairs to coolers filled with refreshments. There was no change to how my vehicle operated. It was as if the Thule bag was not even there. There were sections of the highway where strong cross-winds were posted. Again, the Thule bag had no affect on any aspect of the drive. I have made this trip several times per year for over 20 years, and this trip was as good or better than in years past.

Answer:

I was concerned about this also. But after a recent trip, it added about 0.2 liters/100 km to my mileage on a 3000 km trip. In the end, it was nothing to worry about.

Will this scratch my car?

Answer:

Honestly, I wouldn't put anything in it that you don't want to get wet. Both of the ones that I have were soaked inside after a 6 hour drive. Thumbs down.

We haven't had an issue with scratching. Just be careful when you hoist it onto your roof and ve sure it is fastened very snuggly and it shouldn't move. It only scratches if it slides around. Just don't let it slide and you are good to go!

Yes this will scratch your car. You can purchase a rubber mat to go under this product to protect your car.

Do you need to use this on a roof rack system or can it be put directly on the roof?

Question:

One of my vehicles doesn't have a roof rack. I was wondering if it could still be attached to that car.

Answer:

If you look in the picture you can see that it attaches to the cross bar. I just bought it and haven't had much time to look at it, but I'm sure you can adapt a kayak strap to hold it down (the kind that hooks under the door frame). However, you probably shouldn't do it because of the strong force that this would encounter at highway speeds due to its large area. So my answer is NO, but if you want to test it out, I'm sure it can be done. Although I think that once you're done tying it down properly it defeats the purpose of having an accessible, neat carrier.

I purchased one. Looking on the box, it says that it must be used with a raised rack.
