Excellent Product

"Car would not start. Boost did not solve the issue or change the voltage on battery. Before buying a new battery I decided to give this a go. Trickle charged at 2 AMP and since that battery has worked awesome even with some cold days. The car did stall when I first drove it when for the first stop. I had heater lights and such turned on. It restarted right away and had worked since. Save a cost of a battery.
Easy to use."

Wont charge batteries anymore.

"This worked for the first couple batteries I used it on. Put in the garage as I haven't needed it since last summer, and now it won't do a thing on the SIX (6) batteries I've tried it on this past week to see if it's working. It even brought my brand new Motorcraft battery from 12.5V down to 12.02 now! I will not buy another Motormaster charger as the last one I had did the same..."

"On the coldest days my older car has a hard time starting, not so anymore with the 75A starter feature. Keep this in your trunk and anywhere there's an outlet, there's a start for your car...no more tows"

"I brought my first one in May 2010. That quit working, so I returned it in July, for an exchange. That one quit working in September, so I took it in for another exchange. And now that one has quit working in November. It is obvious, there is serious problems, with this model, and is not worth it."

"This little unit has saved me a lot of $ on tow boost calls. The radio & clock in vehicles is a constant drain on the batteries & without this I would need to call a towtruck for boosts. Basic & simple to use & figure out."

Good Basic Charger

"Have had one of these for about 8 years. Use it to charge deep cycle boat batteries and occassionally a car battery when it gets old. Works well. Starting feature is a bit weak. Better to charge battery for about 10 minutes or more and then try to start the car. I agree with the other reviewer that you can't trust the 2 amp trickle charger. It just never shuts off when you use this setting so you will boil the battery dry. Good unit for the money. However, I also have an intelligent charger which is a better choice if you want to spend more $."

Does this charger have an AGM mode to maintain/charge Optima Red Top battery?

Question:

The instructions for the Optima Red Top battery say to use the AGM setting on a battery charger to "maintain" the battery during storage. They recommend a fully automatic charger but say to use AGM setting and NOT to use the gel or gel/AGM setting.

Answer:

Traditional linear battery chargers are not recommended for AGM batteries (such as those manufactured by Optima) for charging or maintaining as there is little control over the charge voltage or current. You should look for an intelligent/high-frequency/microprocessor-controlled battery charger as they are better suited for handling different battery types. These chargers will either (a) say they can charge all battery types, including AGM and gel batteries or (b) have a specific AGM mode.

When it comes to maintaining (not charging), most battery charger manufacturers use the same float voltage for all battery types (around 13.2V) so there is no battery type selection. For this, consider Canadian Tire models 11-1506 or 11-1507. However, knowing that some AGM battery manufacturers like Optima suggest a slightly higher float voltage, some battery manufacturers actually incorporate an AGM setting in their designs. For this, consider Canadian Tire’s model 11-1522. It is a CTEK model with a specific AGM battery mode.

charger in overload even with no connections to battery

Question:

When plugged in, charger stays in overload. When connected to battery, overload, in all setttings.

It is difficult to comment for certain based on your explanation. Have you tried to connect to a battery in the 2A setting for a few minutes to re-set the overload? Assuming you have, it sounds like you may have encountered a defective unit. Please return it for warranty at your local Canadian Tire store.

Can I change the power cable on this unit?

Question:

I would really like to have a 12 foot cable (give or take) with a 14 gauge outdoor rated cable. Would this void the warranty? If so, how likely would this cause a problem?

Answer:

Any alteration to the unit would void the manufacturers’ warranty. A 16-gauge or heavier extension cord would be enough for this rated power of this battery charger.

How to Question

Question:

I purchased this unit and hooked it up to the car, turned it to charge at 12A and left it overnight but no full charge light came on.

Are the hook-up instructions as printed correct? CAA said the battery was fine other than being a bit low.

Answer:

Make sure the Function switch is set to Charge (not Start).

You should see the amp needle move if you have a good connection and your battery is not completely dead. Try wiggling the clamps around on the battery posts to make sure you have a good connection.
