The WOW! Factor

"My wife and I struggled with a used vacuum for a short time after our marriage, before finally giving up and deciding to buy a new unit. We were fortuitous enough to find this Dirt Devil on sale, and with our Canadian Tire Money, it was nearly free. So, we brought it home, assembled it, and proceeded with a trial run. All we can say is WOW! What a HUGE difference! This small, light-weight little thing really works! Very, very impressed, especially for one of our first appliances bought. Well recommended."

'Wife Likes It...And I Don't

"It's super lightweight which is why my wife likes it on the occasional time when I neglect to vacuum on precisely the date and time that she expects. She just loves it so 5/5 from her end. From my viewpoint, I find that it's so light that the beater brush doesn't really penetrate the carpet that well to pick up the dirt that's really ground into the pile unless you go over those spots several times which at 12 amperes with Dalton McGuinty's hydro pricing $cheme...well, you get the idea. So I give it a 1/5 - split it down the middle and you get a 3/5. And you can't adjust the height of the beater brush - it's done "automatically" whatever that means. I like how it swooshes up the better half's skirt or dresses better than our old vacuum cleaner. I wouldn't buy it again even at the 50 buck sale price I bought it at."

Has Worked Well for Years

"I bought this vacuum several years ago on sale for $50. It does a great job on carpets (I have a long-haired cat that sheds a lot) and it is very easy to switch over to the vacuum wand to get hard to reach areas, sideboards, etc. I don't mind the fact that it blows dust around on the hardwood or solid floors, due to the fan in the front. I just use the wand to grab those bits. It is noisy but for the price, it does the most important job - picking up dirt, debris and dust - very well. I have had this vaccum for several years now and have not needed to replace anything. I have to say it was a great deal and I am very happy with this product."

Not very good

"I purchased this vacuum three years ago when it was on sale. I recently decided to buy a different vacuum since this one wasn't doing a good job. It blows the dust and dirt everywhere. I have found that most times when I shut the unit off, dirt pebbles and crumbs that were sucked up earlier fall back out under the vacuum (this started happening about a year after I bought it). It seems pointless to use now since the dirt is just sitting in the hose rather than the canister where it should be. If you have a pet, I suggest looking at a different vacuum."

"I have a small home cleaning business and have had this vacuum for 1 year now .Great vacuum for 50 $ on sale.The only con I have is have had to change the rubber strap in in 2 times so far.But still cheap at that price and easy to clean ."

good unit, a little loud

"I bought this vacuum for my construction company and was suprised by how well it cleans for the price (on sale for $50).

The first job was I had to go into an office building and demolish walls, but had to save the carpet so I bought it to vacuum the carpets expecting it through it away after the job was done. After heavy cleaning for a good 4 hours it was going strong so I kept it.

The next job I had to clean classrooms after construction in a University. It picked up everything from screws, wire and all types of garbage and still kept going strong, running sometimes for 6 hours straight.

It still continues to work hard, so if it can go thru the abuse I put it thru, it should work well in houses for years and years

The one downfall is it is very loud, but for $50 its hard to complain."

Horrid vacuum cleaner for hardwood floors

"This is by far the worst vacuum cleaner I have ever used. It blows dust all over the place because there`s a huge vent infront of the vacuum so it blows dust around before you can get to it. It is also terribly loud - you would not believe it. The dirt devil website claims that it cleans all floor types but it definitely does not work for hardwood floors. There is a beater brush on the bottom and maybe it works on carpets but on hardwood floors it just ends up flicking dirt and dust onto your feet whilst you`re vacuuming."

Awesome product

"Some things really are that good and priced unbelievably good as well. Such is this product, at this price we bought two, one for the cottage and one for our home. We have been using it quite awhile now as we bought it a year ago at a great sale price like this and we are really really happy with how it works, just incredible!!"

Cheap, effective and pretty

"Although it is all three, cheap effective and pretty... it's probably more a low cost solution for people who don't have 500$ to spend on vaccums. It's much too loud for row houses... and the fan on it blow all the dust away before the vaccum can suck it up, which it does quite well by the way. It looks gorgeous and it's very easy to handle. It works wonders on carpet... soso on floors, mostly because of the fan problem.

In a nut shell : works well, easy to manoeuver, too loud, fan's too strong... Perfect for a low cost option to vaccuming."

Vacuum Works Well - But, it is Very Loud

"I bought this vacuum recently. Good price, it was on sale for only $50. Putting it together wasn't bad at all. It works well, but in the beginning I was astonished by how loud it is. I've gotten used to it now, but it is quite loud. It also blows air so intensely that it blew all of the magnets and papers off of my fridge.

It cleans really well. I appreciate the attachment pieces, I was able to clean parts of my apartment that were unreachable by my old vacuum. One downside is that the base is quite large, so you can't exactly slide it under a bed to vacuum there.

Overall, it is a really good vacuum and I would recommend it. It works well, and the attachments help you to clean everywhere possible. It's nice to see how well it cleans too, the dirt is visible in the clear canister. Just be prepared for the noise level when cleaning.

Good: Long cord, attachments, strong cleaning ability, dirt is collected into tidy container
Bad: Noise level, bulkiness, intense gusts of air from the vacuum"

does the brush really clean low carpets

Question:

The problem I had with another similar product was that the brush being that it's automatic was that it didn't really get into the carpet...in my appartment it's one of those industrial rugs (really a carpet). Also is the suction very good or....

Answer:

For this model, the nozzle’s lip height is set at a fixed height which is generally higher than the bare floor setting or low pile carpet setting of a vacuum with multi height adjustment. The nozzle lip to the top surface of the carpet will vary from low pile to deep plush, we call it ‘Auto height adjust’. This model is pretty good though for cleaning low pile, but in this case, it seems like the nozzle’s fixed height is still up too high for your floor.

As with all Dirt Devil products (I have a canister one that I like) you have to clean the filter often (cleaning ladies hate this!) and it cost $29, 95 to replace ... if they have it. Soon it will be like computer printers, you buy them on sale and trow them away when the ink cartridge runs out. So much for saving the planet

Answer:

Yes, the filter can be easily removed for cleaning. After removal I tap it against the inside of a garbage can to remove the loose dirt trapped in the filter. A bit of a dirty job.

Answer:

The filter pulls out and you can just knock it on the side of the waste bin you're empying into. Most dirt will fall out. Filter replacement is recommended once a year.

Can the wheels and chassis be detached?

Can the wheels and chassis be detached -- for doing stairs? The only carpets in my apartment are on the stairs and landing.

For doing stairs you can just use the tube. The wheels and chassis can`t be detached.

No and no. To clean stairs I use the attachments. I find it light enough to hold the vacuum cleaner in one hand and the attachment hose in the other (the hose is not long enough to reach the other end of the stairs).

We only have hardwood floors & it's been excellent. The crevice attachment allows you to get into the places the main vac can't get to.

I would not recomend this for hard wood floors. The air discharge is at the front of the machine which tends to blow dust in front of you on flooring. I would use it mainly for carpets.
