A One-Trick Pony

"Pros: bagless, doesn't clog

Cons: poor performance, cheap flimsy construction, grossly overpriced

This is a decent vacuum. It doesn't live up to the hype and it's certainly NOT worth the money.

Between my girlfriend and myself we have 3 other vacuums in the house: the central vac, a Miele Red Velvet, and a Bissell Cleanview II. All 3 do a much better job than the Dyson and require far fewer passes to do it. The Dyson has one, and only one, thing going for it: it's the only portable vacuum we've tried that's both bagless and clogproof.

The Miele is in a class by itself when it comes to cleaning, and doesn't clog, but the bags are expensive. The cheap Bissell is bagless, still cleans better than the Dyson, but the filters need to be cleaned ridiculously often.

As far as I'm concerned, the Dyson is only worth buying if you have a LOT of pet hair to deal with. It will pick up pet hair all day long without requiring you to replace bags or clean filters (and all day long is about what it'll take you to clean the rug given its pathetic performance).

With 4 dogs and 4 cats in our country home, we find it's worth using the Dyson to get the majority of the pet hair first, then using one of the other vacuums to finish the job properly. This limits the frequency of bag or filter changes on the other vacuums, and eliminates the frustration of trying to actually make the rug look clean using the Dyson.

Other than performance, build quality is also lacking. The plastic is thin and the various joints and latches feel like they're on the verge of snapping off at the slightest pressure. The round pieces that cover the powerhead pivot came loose and rattle incessantly. The powerhead itself sounds like it has gravel instead of bearings. Overall the construction is much less solid than the Bissell which can be had for less than 1/6 the price. Ironically, the Dyson feels cheap in comparison.

The verdict: a useful tool with a very specific niche. If you don't have multiple shedding pets, you can get a lot more vacuum for a lot less money."

"This is a decent vacuum, but not as magical as the commercials would have one believe. Probably a strong contender if you have hairy pets, otherwise it wouldn't be my first choice.

CONS:
- hose kinks _constantly_
- cord is quite short
- motorized brushhead shuts off by itself (loose connecting in the slip ring I assume after 2 years)
- suction end of wand is huge and awkward for tight spaces

PROS:
- looks cool
- brushhead works very, very well; probably the selling feature if you are a pet owner

I am torn about the bagless design. Originally I wanted it as I hate having to replace consumables, but it is hard to empty it without making a dusty mess.

I now have an Electrolux "green" vacuum which I personally prefer. It is lighter, quieter, has a way longer cord, and has a long, light, and thin wand. The brushhead is nowhere near as good as the Dyson, but I don't have pets and don't need to beat hair out of my carpets. It does use bags... easy clean-up, but a pain when you run out. We'll see how much they end up costing... you could buy a lot of "S" bags for the price difference between this one and the Dyson."

Two major annoyances

"We've had this for about a year and it's a great vacuum cleaner overall.

There are two things that drive me crazy:

1) The hose gets kinked constantly
2) The little catch to keep it coiled up is flimsy and the slightest little bump will knock the hose out of the catch. This makes it difficult to transport when coiled up."

You're getting what you pay for

"The DC21 replaced our broken Hoover. I was debating the cost vs. benefits based on input from others and determined the only true way was to try it for myself. It outperformed our Hoover 3:1 (based upon how much more it picked up in one use - I took a picture of what one of the three canister loads looks like).

PROS
+ Significantly more dust, lint, sand and dirt picked up compared to other vacuums I've used
+ Relatively light weight and easy to maneuver
+ Hose length is decent and swivels nicely to avoid tangling
+ Multi-swivel power head makes for easy turning
+ Canister and power head brushes extremely easy to remove and clean
+ No more noisy than other vacuums at around 12 amps
CONS
- The short cord (more cord = more weight, according to Dyson; but really?)
- Though made of high density plastic, some components make me feel like I need to handle the thing like thin glass
- The accessory connection to the wand is rather bulky for nooks and crannies, even with the benefit of extending the whole pole
- It's design makes it rather large"

Don't get 'sucked' into the hype.

"This is a pretty good vacuum overall, but the invention really stopped with the root cyclone tech. It has loads of suction power, but it doesn't have an adjustable height brush head, the wand is somewhat awkward and heavy to use because of it's swiveling head, and the cord is just ridiculously short.

I like the my DC21, but I think Dyson has 'invented' things for the vacuum just to say they've invented it and not because they were good ideas. If they stuck with the classic vacuum features and applied the cyclone technology, they'd have an unbeatable vacuum."

"This vacuum has major suction! It also handles very nicely around corners, it not heavy and cumbersome and is not overly loud. I would recommend this to anyone looing for high quality. It's a little pricey, but worth every penny!"

Totally Worth the $

"I had not intended on spending this much $ on a vacuum but we recieved gift cards for our wedding and I decided to put them to good use... and I am REALLY glad that I did. This vacuum is by far the best vacuum I have ever had. With a cat and a dog, this vacuum keeps my house clean top to bottom. It's easy to use, has great suction, and has taken things out of my carpet after I had just vacuumed with my old vacuum, which I previously thought did a good job. I recommend this vacuum to everyone!"

I love Dyson

"I didn't want to spend more than $300.00 on a vacuum, because my house is all carpet, I need a great vacuum. I did a lot of research and ended up buying and returning 5 vacuums!! Tried the dirt devil, Bissell, 2 hoovers and the infinity pet. Maybe I was incredibly unlucky - but each of the above had a major problem; from suction to trying to clean the units. I finally said the heck with the $300.00 budget, and bought the Dyson Canister. All I have to say is: If you want a clean house - get a Dyson! It picked up stuff all the others left behind - and believe me, I thought my carpets were super clean! I love my Dyson."

Good Purchase

"Had for over two years now. Use it to vacuum my carpet in condo at least once a week. WOW works great, you will see all that it picks up, via clear collection canister. Easy to clean and quite easy to store away. The entire unit quite heavy if you have to lift and carry, so if you have to do so, START doing arm curls. Very good product."

Which would you recommend? upright or cannister? I have hardwood,tile and carpet + 12 carpeted stairs

Answer:

Canister is more convenient for carpeted stairs, since you can use the powerhead without having to lift the entire vacuum.

Answer:

Depending upon how much carpet, a power head (roller brush) would be useful. For you, a canister vacuum with a hard surface, replaceable head might work better than an upright.

Answer:

I've tried both and find the canister version much more manageable. The canister is small enough to sit on most steps while you vacuum and then move it down as you go. I found the upright works very well but found it heavy and awkward to manoeuver around objects. I ended up going with the canister model and am very happy with it.

We are trying to get a good HEPA canister vacuum for our home, and can someone tell me why is this vacuum 599$ whereas I can find other comparable vacuums for 200-300$? What is so special about Dyson?

What makes Dyson different is this: Dyson’s patented root cyclone technology separates out the dust and dirt several times before it even passes through the HEPA filter – therefore making the HEPA filter only separate out clean air from cleaner air (which is what a HEPA filter is designed to do). Other vacuums do offer a HEPA filter in their vacuums, but because they don’t have the same technology as Dyson, dust and dirt doesn’t get separated efficiently and their filters will clog over time – thereby losing suction.
