Very good Window Air Conditioner

"This is my 4th Air Conditioner purchase, and the 3rd one in my Townhouse. Whirlpool have improved the quality of their Air Conditioners over the last couple of years. These unites have some new and very useful features and are very quiet. Don't let the price tag fool you, they might only be half the price of some of the other popular brands, but they work just as good or even better. It comes with a very simple and compact remote. Canadian Tire image is not exactly what comes in the box, so I've posted mine here."

Good Value for the price

"Just finished installing unit...had to re-frame hole as casement window was larger than 15 1\2 inches, none-the-less, it was an easy install...the only downfall is that the support angle/bracket is somewhat flimsy..it really doesn't support much at all...decided not to use it...will keep you updated as to cooloing performance....Good name brand unit...."

Good buy

"I've had it for 2 days now and love it! Easy to install. The fan is a bit loud as I sit 5 feet away from it but the price was right, if someone wants real quiet then pay double for a Carrier. I can hardly hear the compressor turning on as one comment said

I also run two high end computers(lots of heat) 24/7 in a 200 sqft. room and it handles all with aplomb, besides being on a south facing wall."

Can't Go Wrong With This Unit

"We have had a number of AC units and this Whirlpool is by far the best. Easy to set up, outside mounting bracket included, cooled the room down in less than 1 hour. The quick cool function is great and the handy magnetic remote is a great bonus. Great value for the money!"

Whirlpool Vertical Window Air Conditioner, 8000 BT

"We're going through a slight heat wave in Winnipeg (as of May 18th, 2010) and I needed to get a new a/c unit for my bedroom.
I finally managed to track one down at a local store and lugged it home. (the box is awkwardly big and somewhat heavy)
I must say that this unit is extraordinary! Using this in my bedroom with one small fan to circulate air cools my entire house. Granted, my home is only 785 square feet, but still!
Setup was is a little tricky if you have older window tracks but after some elbow grease, I managed to make a nice, tight fit with the help of the supplied self-sticking foam padding and black duct tape.
You may want to find a sturdier piece to fill in the gap above the unit as the frosted piece supplied is a little flimsy.
One of only two drawbacks is that once the desired temperature has been reached, a rather audible "clunk" can be heard when it is switching to the fan only mode. If it's in your bedroom, it will more than likely wake you up now and again.
But for how well this works, it's a small price to pay to be able to fall asleep in a nice, cold bedroom!
Another point of note, this unit is rather deep so a good 16 inches sticks out of your window but the supplied bracket does handle the weight nicely. A bit of an eyesore, but it's a trade off."

Completely hassle free purchase.

"We originally purchased an airconditioner designed for a vertical window, on being told by a Rona specialist that they were "a doddle" to fit... this model was a cheaper alternative, and yet despite the fairly brief instructions, was extremely simple to fit and required no drilling to install in our third-floor apartment horizontally sliding kitchen window. We intend to buy a second unit as we are so impressed with the performane- at 8000 BTU it is slightly small for our entire 5 1/2 apartment, but with two we are sure that our needs will be more than met. If you want a simple, uncomplicated air con unit for a small or medium apartment or a large room... this could well be your baby! Fantastic buy, and great price too from our local Canadian Tire! We'll be back!"

Best decision

"Its the best you can get for horizontally sliding windows that are found in most apartments. Super easy installation. It literally took me 5 minutes. You would be needing an electric drill though but even then it didnt take me much long. I trust this brand and the a/c has been on for the last 12 hours and it made my living room(500sft) cool in less than 2 hours.
I Highly recommend this...!!"

Very good AC, but pretty loud...

"This AC was one of the only ones I could find that fits a horizontal sliding window. Almost every AC out there seems to be designed for vertcial sliding windows. Anyway, this one is well designed, and although the instructions aren't that great, if you take your time to figure everything out, the final installation looks and works beautifully. Make sure to read the instructions carefully regarding installation as there are a few points where you can go wrong. The kit comes with pretty much everything you need including a piece of soft-plexi-material that you cut to fit the area above the AC to complete the install. One thing, the instructions ask that you drill several holes into you window frame for anchor screws. No problems, but the two holes at the bottom of the AC unit are difficult to drill out unless you have a long extension drill bit because the AC unit is actually in the way. One other thing that you might want to get is sliding window screw lock. This allows you to slide the window shut against the AC unit then tighten it up to prevent the unit sliding sideways. (I live in Vancouver and seismic risk concerns me).
Once installed, the unit works beautifully. Personally I like the steady hum (white noise) of the unit, but some people might find it too loud. It is pretty much what I expected...similar loudness level to wall units at hotels.
Very effective at cooling a room (mine has tall ceilings and it went from 88 degrees to 72 degrees in less than an hour).

What kind of window do I need for this?

Question:

Does anyone know whether this fits into a window that is opened, or whether it's cut into the glass? I have tall thin windows that open outwards, and I can't tell whether this would work.

Answer:

I installed a unit two days ago. I have a horizontal sliding window and found the installation very easy. In fact if you live in a bulding where there is a no hole-drilling policy, and the window sills are wide, especially the outside sills, you can use slabs of thick wood on the inside and outside sills to support the AC. Place the AC against one end of the window and slide the sash till it touches the AC. For added support, place another thick slab of wood at the other end of the window to act as a window lock.Even if drilling is permitted, you can use wooden slabs if you find, as I did, the installation procedure outlined in the manual not easy to fathom. So far, I am very satisfied with the AC in all respects - noise level, dripping, cooling efficiency etc.

Hello Anonymous, the Air Conditioner is 14.5 inches wide, so you should have at least this for it to fit through. I posted an image of mine in my review.

Would it be safe to install this in a toddler's room?

Question:

If the support bracket were installed, would he be able to accidentally push it out the window? Is there anywhere he could get his fingers through to touch a moving part?

Answer:

Hello Lryssa, the unit is as safe as you install it. It should be fine for your son's room, just make sure when you install it to completely seal around the unit, and most important, I would recommended to put a window cell clamp on the railing or a bar behind the window to prevent the window from opening or sliding depending on the type of window that's in his room..

Answer:

Once installed, the unit is very secure. You actually screw it right into the window frame. Also, the bracket would keep it from falling out. There are no moving parts that a toddler could get their fingers stuck in.

Answer:

Don't worry, the unit will be fixed tightly on the windowsill after correct installation, even a very strong adult can not push it out of the window easily. Besides, no one's finger (no matter children's or audit's) will touch a moving parts as long as the unit is not disassembled, which is strictly requested by cULus safety standard. All models in North American market is certified qualified with that standard.

width and height

Question:

It says it is 42" wide and 21" high, but looking at the picture it seems like it is the opposite. I have a window that is 19" wide, and I wonder if I could make it fit.

Hello Krista19, the Air Conditioner is actually 14.5 inches wide and 20.5 inches high and comes with material to extend the height another 19.5 inches high. My window open's to 15 inches and this worked out just fine.

Answer:

I just measured this unit installed in my window and the measurement is about 18 inches wide including the window frame hardware.
You shouldn't have a problem getting it in there.

I installed a unit two day ago and I have to say that the noise level was below my expectations. I feared it would be high but what surprise! In fact I find the noise sleep-inducing! But who knows? Perhaps two days is too short a period to judge. We'll see.

Answer:

Hello Anonymous, at 3 feet away from it (which is the standard distance for checking this reading) the unit is at 46db with the fan on low, and at 48db with the fan of high. You can barely hear the compressor switch on and off. I have another Air Conditioner that makes a very loud noise when the compressor switches off. (FYI)
