Home Comfort Buying Guide
Once the cold weather sets in, striking the optimum balance between heat and humidity levels for indoor air is essential if you want to be comfortable in your home.
To achieve this, consider the benefits of a programmable thermostat, an air humidifier and a portable home heater. With the right combination, you can ensure your family’s comfort, save money and help the environment.
Thermostats (Programmable)
The #1 way to reduce your energy bill. These thermostats can reduce your energy consumption up to 33%. Did you know that turning down your thermostat by 1 degree overnight will save 3% on your energy consumption? By reducing the temperature in your home by 5 degrees at night, you could save 15% on your heating costs.
Which thermostat is right for you?
You can choose a standard thermostat which is designed for temperature control. Also available is a programmable thermostat. There are three types:
- 5/2 - This option will allow you to set 1 program for Monday – Friday and 1 for Saturday and Sunday. If your weekday schedule is relatively similar each day and your typical Saturday and Sunday are similar, then this programming option is right for you.
- 5/1/1 - This option has 1 program for Monday – Friday, 1 program for Saturday and 1 program for Sunday. If your weekdays are similar but your Saturday schedule is considerably different from Sunday, then 5/1/1 programming is your best option.
- 7 day - A separate program for each day is available. If each day is different from the last, then a 7-day programmable thermostat will meet your needs.
Portable Home Heaters
Why heat the whole house when you are spending the entire evening in the living room? Turn down the thermostat and use a portable heater for the room you're in. They're also ideal for that cold spot in your home - be it the garage, a sunroom or a bedroom above the garage. With portable heaters, you get instant heat, cost control and portability. A portable heater is a great choice for quick and cost-efficient heating and can cost less than 10 cents an hour* to operate (*based on hydro rates of 6¢/kW hour). Many portable heaters offer features such as Safety fuses, Tip-over switch, Auto shut-off and Cool-touch housing. Check packaging for details.
There are four different types of portable heaters and each offers a variety of benefits to suit your needs: Fan-Forced, Ceramic, Radiant & Convective.
Why choose a fan-forced heater?
Fan-forced heaters generate heat by allowing electricity to pass through electric strips or coiled wires – and then forcing that heat into the air with the aid of an integrated fan.
- Compact size for easy portability
- Ideal for smaller spaces
- Provides value and convenience
The benefits of a ceramic heater
The solid ceramic plate in this heater generates heat, which is then fan-forced into the air.
- Generates instant heat
- Self-regulating output
- Easily portable
Great reasons to select a radiant heater
The sun-like effect of a radiant heater warms people/objects that are directly in its path.
- A fast, effective solution for small areas or spot heating
- Great value and a popular choice for heating personal spaces
- Ideal for uninsulated, hard to heat areas like a garage
Convective heaters - a smart choice for big rooms
Convective heaters draw in cool air, heat it, then release it back into the room.
- No need for costly fan operation
- Silently warms the air while maintaining a more even room temperature
- Ideal for sleeping and living areas
*All Heaters may be damaged by moisture and should NOT be used in bathrooms
