Installing a Garbage Disposer
A garbage disposer is a modern kitchen appliance that offers an easy, hygienic way to manage food waste. It is installed under the kitchen sink and attached to the drain. With a stream of cold water from the kitchen tap, the disposer is turned on with the touch of a button or flip of a wall switch. Within seconds, the disposer conveniently grinds food waste to fine particles that are flushed out of the grind chamber and into the septic or sewage system.
Food waste disposers offer:
- Cleanliness. Rather than scraping and pouring messy food waste into a kitchen trash bin, simply turn on the cold water, switch the disposer on and empty the unwanted food waste into the sink.
- Hygiene. Reduction of insects and odors in the home.
- Convenience. Offers quick clean-up before and after meal preparation.
- Practical. A disposer fits unobtrusively under the sink. It is easy to install in both new and existing kitchens.
When it comes to selecting a disposer, it helps to think about how you will use your new kitchen appliance. Select one that can handle the amount of food waste generated by your family. Horsepower can also be considered when it comes to disposing of more food waste at a faster rate. Some disposers are specially designed to work with septic systems. Continuous feed disposers use a standard wall switch, while batch feed disposers are turned on using a special starting mechanism in a cover that fits over the drain opening. Greater peace of mind will be derived from the length and type of warranty offered. Select the model that meets your household’s needs and helps to maintain a clean and bright kitchen!
The sink in which you are installing the disposer should have a normal, full-size drain opening (3 ½ - 4 inches.) To power the new disposer, you should ideally run a dedicated circuit from the breaker panel. If that is not possible, tie into an existing circuit but be sure to check that the load will be acceptable for that circuit.
Note: Important installation safety information is provided in the manufacturer’s ICU manual. Before attempting to install a disposer, first read and understand the entire safety and installation instructions.
